Spotlighting Remarkable Women and Girls

The Day I Got Threatened for Not Loving Her Back

By Anonymous

You know those stories that sound like they were pulled straight from a Nollywood script? Yeah, this is one of them. Except it happened to me in real life, not on any screen. And the craziest part? It all started at a salon.

It was a regular day. I was getting my hair braided, minding my business and lowkey fighting sleep when this lady walks in. She looked pretty, carried herself with a certain confidence, and somehow, we got talking while she waited for her turn. Fast forward a few hours later, we found ourselves heading the same way and decided to share a cab. That cab ride would be the beginning of what I now call the strangest situationship I’ve ever experienced.

In the cab, we talked more. You know how it goes, music, opinions on random things, laughter. There was a natural flow. Before we got off, we exchanged contacts. Nothing too deep. No pressure.

Over the next few days, we started chatting regularly. And just to be clear, from the very beginning, I let her know that I wasn’t looking for anything serious. I had just gotten out of a long, emotionally draining relationship. My heart was still licking its wounds, and I was genuinely not in the headspace for anything intense.

I told her this as respectfully and clearly as possible. She, on the other hand, was in a relationship though, according to her, the guy was toxic and not treating her right. I didn’t ask for details. I wasn’t trying to be a savior or a shoulder to cry on. We were just… talking.

Things were fine until one particular evening when we were having a phone conversation. It was like every other chat, a little bit of banter, checking in on each other, you know, the usual. Then just as we were about to end the call, she said it. Those three words.

“I love you.”

My brain paused. Not the kind of pause where you’re surprised and happy. No. The kind of pause where you’re scrambling internally because you don’t want to hurt someone, but you also can’t lie.

I froze. Stayed silent for a few seconds. Then she said goodbye and dropped the call.

About five minutes later, I got a message: “You didn’t say anything about what I said. Did you even hear me?”

Of course, I heard her. How could I not? But what do you say to someone who has just told you they love you when you know you don’t feel the same? Especially after you’ve already made your intentions clear?

I replied, honestly: “Yes, I heard you. I just didn’t know what to say.”

That was when the story flipped.

She went from soft to stormy in under sixty seconds. Suddenly, she was threatening me. Saying things like, “You think you can mess with me? I’ll deal with you,” and “You’ll see what I can do.” I was shocked. One minute I was being honest, the next, I was being cast as the villain in a drama I never signed up for.

I kept calm and tried to defuse the situation. I reminded her that I had been clear from day one and that I never led her on. But she wasn’t hearing any of that. She kept going, throwing in a mix of insults and more threats.

That night, I sat and thought to myself:

Is this what honesty gets you?

The funny thing is, we didn’t even date. Not officially. Not emotionally. Nothing. Just chats and occasional calls. Yet, somehow, she had imagined a whole love story. And when it didn’t go her way, she decided I was the enemy.

That experience made me even more cautious about opening up to new people. It also taught me that sometimes, even when you state your intentions clearly, people hear what they want to hear. And when reality doesn’t match the script in their head, it becomes your fault.

So yeah, that’s my story. The day I got threatened for not loving a lady back.

Lesson learned: Clear communication is essential but emotional awareness and mutual respect are what truly make any connection work. And sometimes, silence isn’t avoidance. It’s just better than saying something fake.
