Who says superheroes do not exist? For the past decade, the HeForShe movement has been unveiling a league of extraordinary gentlemen, men who have swapped capes for commitment and superpowers for solidarity in the quest for gender equality. At the last United Nations General Assembly (UNGA79), the HeForShe movement marked its ten-year milestone, reminding us that when men and women join forces, the sky’s the limit.
At the recent HeForShe Summit, held alongside the global discussions at UNGA79 and the Beijing+30 review, the focus was clear: male allyship isn’t just a nice-to-have; it’s a necessity. UN Women’s Executive Director, Sima Bahous, delivered a rallying cry that could wake even the sleepiest of souls: it’s time for men to challenge discrimination, give up space without hesitation, and transform every corner of society into a bastion of equality and justice. After all, if you can make a difference, you must.
Echoing this sentiment, the United Nations Deputy Secretary- General, Amina J. Mohammed, highlighted that gender equality isn’t just Goal Number 5 on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) checklist, it’s the linchpin for all 17 goals. She pointed out that progress has been slower than a snail on holiday, but with male allies stepping up, we can shift gears. “By enlisting men and boys as allies, it reflects the reality that everyone has a stake in gender equality. Everyone has roles in achieving it,” she affirmed.
As we celebrate a decade of HeForShe, it’s time to shine a spotlight on a few men who are not just talking the talk but walking the walk, even if it means treading into uncharted territory. These are the trailblazers, the extra-milers, proving that when it comes to championing gender equality, everyone’s invited to the party both locally, nationally and globally. From dads who raise powerful daughters to Husbands who propel their wives to excel, to Males bosses, advocates, friends and brothers, a little goes a long way.
Benedict Cumberbatch #Equalpay
Benedict Cumberbatch is not just known for his compelling performances on screen but also for his commitment to gender equality. The British actor has consistently used his platform to advocate for women’s rights, embodying the principles of the HeForShe movement, a solidarity campaign initiated by UN Women to engage men and boys in the fight for gender equality.

One of the most notable demonstrations of his commitment was when he insisted on equal pay for his female co-stars. In 2018, Cumberbatch publicly declared that he would refuse any project where his female counterparts were not equally compensated. “Equal pay and a place at the table are the central tenets of feminism,” he stated. “Look at your quotas. Ask what women are being paid, and say, ‘If she’s not paid the same as the men, I’m not doing it.'”
This bold stance sent ripples through the entertainment industry, encouraging other male actors to examine their own roles in perpetuating pay disparities. By leveraging his influence, Cumberbatch brought attention to the often-overlooked issue of wage inequality in Hollywood and beyond.
Beyond advocating for equal pay, Cumberbatch has been involved in various campaigns and discussions promoting gender equality. He participated in the launch of the HeForShe Arts Week in 2016, an initiative that celebrates the contribution of arts and culture in shaping perceptions around gender issues. His involvement underscored the importance of engaging all sectors of society in this global movement.
Cumberbatch has also been vocal about redefining masculinity. In interviews, he has challenged traditional gender norms, encouraging men to express vulnerability and empathy. “It’s everyone’s responsibility to be aware of the inequality and the imbalance,” he remarked. “We need to fix the behaviour of men.
His advocacy extends his personal life as well. As a father of sons, he has expressed his commitment to raising them with an awareness of gender equality, teaching them respect and fairness from an early age.
Benedict Cumberbatch’s actions exemplify how influential figures can contribute to the HeForShe movement. By speaking out, making principled choices in his career, and embodying the change he wishes to see, he sets a powerful example. His efforts demonstrate that when men actively participate in the pursuit of equality, they help create a more just and inclusive society for all.
Donald Chidi Amamgbo #Justice

At home, he is the proud father of two daughters whom he has encouraged to break barriers and dominate in their chosen fields. Fostering an environment free from limiting beliefs, he has shown how fathers should raise their daughters, championing their ambitions and celebrating their successes. His daughters’ achievements are living proof that empowerment truly begins at home.
But Donald’s impact doesn’t stop at his front door. Recognising the transformative power of education, he’s been a staunch advocate for girls in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Maths (STEAM). Through scholarships and mentorship programmes, he has opened doors for young women to step confidently into fields traditionally dominated by men. He has supported women’s initiatives by providing resources and support to countless girls, enabling them to pursue their dreams without hesitation.
In his community, he is affectionately known as “Okosisi,” an Igbo term meaning “great tree,” symbolising strength and shelter. His philanthropic efforts are as diverse as they are impactful, from personally funding pensions for elderly women to uplifting widows through financial aid and vocational training. Addressing the unique challenges faced by women in his region, Donald has positioned himself as a leader who understands that empowering grassroot women strengthens entire communities.
His legal career further highlights his commitment to gender justice. Donald has taken on cases that defend the rights of women, challenging discriminatory practices and advocating for equal treatment under the law. His efforts have not only provided justice for individuals but have also set precedents benefiting many others.
Politically, Donald Amamgbo’s aspirations are deeply intertwined with his mission for equality. In speeches and public forums, he emphasises the importance of inclusive governance. “When we empower women, we empower the nation,” he stated during a recent town hall meeting. “Our progress depends on the opportunities we create for everyone, regardless of gender.”
Globally minded yet locally invested, Donald represents a new wave of leadership that prioritises people over politics. In a society eager for authentic champions of change, Donald Chidi Amamgbo stands tall as a he-for-she hero. His legacy isn’t measured by accolades, but by the lives he has touched and the barriers he’s helped dismantle. Through his dedication to women and girls, he exemplifies how one person’s commitment can drive significant strides toward gender equality.
Bill Gates #Health

One of the most significant ways Gates has shown support is through substantial investments in women’s health and education. The foundation has allocated billions of dollars to initiatives that improve maternal health, expand access to contraceptives, and eradicate diseases that disproportionately affect women and children. By addressing these critical areas, Gates acknowledges that women’s health is a cornerstone of global development.
In education, the Gates Foundation has funded programs that aim to increase girls’ enrollment and retention in schools, particularly in underserved regions. Recognizing that education is a powerful tool for empowerment, these efforts help break the cycle of poverty and open up opportunities for young women to participate fully in their societies.
Economic empowerment is another area where Gates has made a significant impact. The foundation supports initiatives that provide women with access to financial services, vocational training, and resources to start their own businesses. For instance, the foundation’s involvement in programs like CARE’s Village Savings and Loan Associations has enabled millions of women to gain financial independence.
Moreover, Gates has used his platform to advocate for gender equality on the global stage. In various speeches and interviews, he has emphasized that empowering women and girls is essential for addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges. “When women are healthy, educated, and empowered, everyone benefits,” he has often stated.
Gates’s commitment is also evident in the foundation’s approach to data and research. By supporting gender-specific data collection and analysis, the foundation helps ensure that policies and programs are effectively tailored to meet the needs of women and girls.
In essence, Bill Gates demonstrates the HeForShe ethos by leveraging his resources, influence, and voice to create a more equitable world. His actions highlight the crucial role men can play in
Sheikh Amir Jaafar Kaŵinga #Advocacy
Who says you need a cape to be a hero? Sometimes all it takes is a turban and a heart full of justice. Meet Sheikh Amir Jaafar Kaŵinga, the Malawian village chief and Muslim cleric who is turning heads and changing lives by championing gender equality in a way that’s anything but ordinary.
In a world where actions speak louder than words, Sheikh Amir has been making quite the statement. Recently honoured with the 2024 Women of Substance Award by the Pan African Learning and Growth Network (PALGNET), he’s not just talking the talk, he is walking the walk, rescuing over 50 girls from forced marriages. Yes, you read that right. Fifty. And he is not stopping there.
“I appreciate the AACC for helping me and other religious leaders recognize that part of our responsibility is to end Gender-Based Violence and promote human dignity,” he remarked after receiving his award. As one of the All Africa Conference of Churches’ male champions for Gender Justice, Sheikh Amir is a man on a mission.
He is not doing this solo. His collaboration with UN Women and other organizations has led to the creation of over 100 youth education clubs. These aren’t your average after-school hangouts; they are safe spaces tackling sexual and reproductive health challenges head-on. Talk about making waves!
Wearing many hats (and probably a few crowns), Sheikh Amir is involved in a slew of leadership roles, from the Public Affairs Committee to the Muslim Forum for Democracy and Peace. But perhaps his most impactful title is that of a HeForShe advocate who’s unafraid to ruffle feathers for the greater good. “I dedicate this award to all Male Champions for Gender Justice across Africa. I pray that we remain motivated to ending gender inequalities in our countries and Africa at large,” he said, spreading the credit like the true team player he is.
In a society where gender equality can often feel like an uphill battle, Sheikh Amir Jaafar Kaŵinga is the refreshing tailwind pushing progress forward. He’s proof that when men join the fight for women’s rights, mountains move and sometimes, so do outdated mindsets. So here is to the Sheikh who is shaking things up. May his actions inspire others to pick up the mantle, challenge the status quo, and perhaps, become heroes in their own right.
9 Ways Men Can Become Allies for Equal Rights: A Call to Action
Let’s get one thing straight: gender equality is not just a women’s issue. It’s a human rights issue, and guess what? Men, you have a crucial role to play! Women are on the front lines, battling for their rights daily, but to truly level the playing field, men must examine their own power dynamics and step up for change. We have highlighted some practical guide to becoming a proactive ally in the women’s rights movement because equality is sexy!
Engage in Real Conversations
Strike up a dialogue with the women in your life, friends, family, coworkers. Listen to their experiences and ask how you can support them. Remember, solidarity isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a lifestyle!
Start with Your Own Reflection
Before jumping into activism, take a moment to reflect on your own behaviors. Are you unconsciously applying gender stereotypes? Awareness is the first step to making meaningful change.
Educate Yourself on the Movement
The women’s rights movement has a rich history, and knowing it can make you a more informed ally. From suffragettes to modern-day activists, understanding this journey can empower you to contribute effectively.
Ditch the Disturbing Content
We have all seen those cringe-worthy posts that normalize violence against women. Resist the urge to share! Your social media feed can be a tool for progress rather than a platform for perpetuating harmful stereotypes.
Support Women’s Organization
Whether it’s volunteering your time or donating resources, get involved with women’s organizations in your community. They are the real MVPs fighting for equality, and they could use your backing!
Keep Women at the Centre
Remember, it’s all about women. Their needs and voices should lead the discussion on their rights. Acknowledge that women are not just participants in this movement; they are its leaders.
Say No to Sexist Content
When you encounter sexist jokes or hate speech, don’t just scroll past. Challenge it! Use language that uplifts rather than belittles. For a fresh start, check out UN Women Turkey’s collaboration with the Turkish Dictionary for tips on gender-neutral language.
Be an Active Bystander
Silence is complicity. If you witness any form of violence against women, be it at home, work, or in public, speak up! Know the resources available for reporting such incidents and take action.
Think Long-Term
The fight for women’s rights is a marathon, not a sprint. Reflect on how your involvement today can create a ripple effect for tomorrow. Share accurate information, inspire the younger generation, and remain a committed ally through your actions and words.
