Achievers for Christ fellowship International with Raising Women Initiative had the privilege of visiting the small community of disabled individuals in Karamajiji, Abuja. Our mission was to provide support through cooked meals while getting to know the residents and understanding their needs for empowerment.
Among the many heartwarming moments, we encountered adorable children who brought joy to our visit. The community members were incredibly welcoming and organized, showcasing remarkable leadership in their coordination efforts.
During our discussions with the women and girls about maintaining menstrual hygiene and their livelihoods, I was struck by their incredible craftsmanship, particularly in wig making. It was inspiring to witness their strong desire for independence and self-sufficiency.
However, we also learned about the challenges they face regarding period poverty. Some girls reported spending an average of N1,200 which is less than a $1 monthly on sanitary pads, relying heavily on their earnings and donations. One woman, Rabi, poignantly stated, “If not for this work, hunger for don kill us… we need help make we fit help ourselves.”
Their aspirations for education and employment were clear, and it became evident that with proper support, they could achieve their goals. I wish we had organized our visit with more volunteers to maximize our impact, but this experience marks the beginning of our monthly advocacy efforts to assist the underserved in our society.
What a wonderful way to conclude the month of September! We look forward to a more impactful October, especially as we focus on the Girl Child. Wishing everyone an amazing weekend ahead!
