Spotlighting Remarkable Women and Girls

The Good Samaritan’s Guide: Transformative Destinations for Giving Back

In the world of travel, few experiences compare to the deep satisfaction that comes from giving back. Having worked as a humanitarian in conflict and post conflict zones like Liberia, just after their brutal 14-year civil war, and in the Central African Republic (CAR), I’ve seen firsthand the impact that charity work
can have, not only on those receiving aid but also on those giving it. The sense of fulfilment and connection to humanity that comes from helping others in need is unparalleled. With this in mind, I’ve compiled a list of five destinations where travellers can immerse themselves in the culture while making a
meaningful difference.

Kigali, Rwanda

Rwanda, a country known for its tragic history, has made remarkable strides in rebuilding and healing. Kigali, the capital, is a hub for various charitable organizations focused on community development, education, and women’s empowerment. Travellers can get involved by volunteering with organizations
like Kigali Genocide Memorial or Women for Women International. These programs allow visitors to engage directly with survivors of the genocide, helping them rebuild their lives through education and entrepreneurship. Volunteers can assist in teaching skills, supporting community projects, or
simply lending an ear to those who need it.

Port-au-Prince, Haiti

Haiti, still reeling from the devastating 2010 earthquake, is a destination where charitable work is not just welcome, but essential. Port-au-Prince, the capital, offers numerous opportunities for volunteers. Organizations like Habitat for Humanity and Mission of Hope run projects where you can help build homes, schools, and medical facilities. For those with medical training, there are also opportunities to provide healthcare services in underserved communities. Even if you don’t have specific skills, your time and compassion can make a significant difference in the lives of Haitians still struggling to recover.

Gulu, Uganda

Northern Uganda, particularly the town of Gulu, has been deeply affected by decades of conflict. Today, it is a place of hope and recovery, with numerous initiatives aimed at rebuilding the community and supporting former child soldiers. Organizations like Invisible Children and Watoto offer volunteer
opportunities that range from teaching and mentoring to assisting in trauma recovery programs. By participating, volunteers contribute to the healing process and help these young people reclaim their lives and futures.

Calcutta, India

Calcutta, now known as Kolkata, is a city with a deep history of charitable work, largely influenced by the legacy of Mother Teresa. Visitors can volunteer with the Missionaries of Charity, working in orphanages, care homes, or hospices. This work is both challenging and rewarding, as volunteers care for the most
vulnerable populations—abandoned children, the elderly, and the terminally ill. The experience is an eye-opening journey into the reality of life in one of India’s most densely populated cities, offering a chance to make a tangible difference in the lives of those who have little.

Siem Reap, Cambodia

While Siem Reap is best known for the stunning temples of Angkor Wat, it is also a place where poverty and lack of access to education are significant issues. Numerous NGOs operate in the region, providing educational opportunities and vocational training for disadvantaged children and adults. Travelers can
volunteer with organizations like Sala Bai Hotel School or Anjali House, teaching English, supporting local artisans, or helping with community development projects. These opportunities allow visitors to contribute to the local economy and help break the cycle of poverty in a meaningful way. Traveling with the intent to give back transforms the way you experience the world. It adds a layer of depth to your journeys, allowing you to connect with people and places in a way that simple tourism cannot. Whether you’re teaching a child in Uganda, building a home in Haiti, or caring for the sick in India, the impact of your efforts extends far beyond the immediate help you provide. It creates a ripple effect, fostering hope and change in communities across the globe. So, as you plan your next trip, consider embarking on a Good Samaritan journey. Not only will you see the world, but you’ll also leave it a little better than you found it.
