Skincare Secrets He Needs to Know… But Will Not Ask For

By Yunik Treasure

Let us face it, the man in your life might know his way around a toolbox or the latest gadget, but when it comes to skincare, he is more lost than a penguin in the Sahara. While he may not admit it, his skin could use some attention, and who better to guide him than you?

The Great Moisturizer Mystery

Many men believe that skincare begins and end with a bar of soap. According to a study by Mintel, only 58% of men use any kind of facial skincare product. It is time to enlighten him about the wonders of moisturizer. Explain that hydrating the skin is not about vanity; it is about preventing dryness, irritation and premature ageing.

The Sunscreen Saga

If he spends time outdoors, sunscreen is non-negotiable. The Skin Cancer Foundation reports that twice as likely as women to develop and die from skin cancer (Skin Cancer Foundation 2020). Encourage him to use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen daily. Remind him that sun damage is not a badge of honour.

Cleanse Without Stripping Away His Dignity

Introduce him to a gentle facial cleanser that suits his skin type. Harsh soaps can strip the skin of natural oils, leading to overcompensation in oil production and breakouts. A cleanser with natural ingredients will cleanse without causing World War II on his face.

Eye Creams Are Not A Conspiracy

Those fine lines and dark circle are not going to fix themselves. An eye cream can reduce puffiness and make him look less like he has just pulled an all-nighter, even if he has.

Exfoliation: Not Just for Kitchen Floors

Dead skin cells can clog pores and lead to dull complexion. Suggest a gentle exfoliator to use once or twice a week. It will leave his skin feeling smother and can even improve his shaving experience by preventing ingrown hairs.

Keep it Simple

Men appreciate straightforward routines. Start him off with a basic regimen: cleanse, moisture, and apply sunscreen. As he becomes more comfortable, he might be open to adding additional steps.

Make it a Team Effort

Suggest doing skincare routine together. It can be a fun way to bond and shows that skincare is not just a “girl thing”. Plus, sharing products is economical.

Helping the man in your life embrace skincare does not have to be a mission impossible. With a little encouragement and the right approach, he will be on his way to healthier skin and he might just thank you for it (even if he will not admit it).

Appeal to His Interest

Frame skincare in a way that resonates with him. If he is into fitness, explain that skin health is part of overall wellness. If he is competitive, mention that looking after his skin gives him an edge.
